IGWAS 2022 EARTH DAY

Every April 22 the world and its habitat celebrate our dear mother earth, we do this to demonstrate support for environmental protection. The First earth day was held on April 22, 1970, and for the past 52 years, it has been an excellent opportunity to be part of the impact which has resulted in policy change and a greater awareness of the environment.

The Earth Day theme 2022 was “Invest in Our Planet” which featured five primary programs: The Great Global Cleanup, Sustainable Fashion, Climate and Environmental Literacy, Canopy Project, Food and Environment, and the Global Earth Challenge.

To commemorate Earth day and invest in the planet, The Initiative for green and waste free societies (IGWAS) empowered waste pickers with personal protective equipment (PPE), Having realized the need to ensure the safety of the waste pickers while they are making sure the city and its environment are waste free.

The waste pickers are mostly women and youths from underserved communities who choose to pick waste and sell it to recyclers like Trash Monger Limited and other recyclers in exchange for cash to support their families and engage in a decent source of income. we encouraged them to do more and sensitize them on how impactful their work is, and their contribution to achieving sustainable cities and communities.

The day was remarkable as we were able to encourage the youths in the community to embrace decent job opportunities available

and also sensitize the communities on the impact of living sustainably.

The waste Pickers were given personal protective equipment (PPE).

They had a representative who spoke on their behalf and expressed their gratitude and joy of being recognized.

we look forward to doing more projects to ensure environmental sustainability is the core of every household and to achieving sustainable development goals 13, CLIMATE ACTION!
Thank You.
